Is Your Litter Box Odor Making you Sick?
by Linda Hall, Cat Behavior Expert
Litter boxes are a hot topic. They are key to cat life, but, if we are honest, they are also gross. No one wants to see those nasty cat clumps and we certainly don’t want to smell it. I purrrsonally have two huge offenders, one in my bedroom and one in a very small bathroom. Climbing into bed, or using that bathroom is often accompanied by the lovely scent of poo and pee. Yuck. In addition to being gross, did you know those lovely litter box odors can also make you sick?
Can Cat Box Odors Make you Sick?
Cat urine is full of ammonia, which is a toxic gas. Yes, I said TOXIC! Litter box odor can cause respiratory illnesses including pneumonia. Those odors may trigger asthma attacks and cause headaches as well. Older cat lovers, children and those who are immunocompromised are especially susceptible to getting sick from that litter box. I am immunocompromised due to MS, so it is something I am very cautious about, especially when in that tiny bathroom!
What About our Cats?
Those litter box odors aren’t just dangerous for us! They can make your kitty ill. Cats spend a lot of time in that small space and it’s not just the ammonia that affects them. Feces is full of bacteria and your cat can develop kidney problems, urinary tract disease and bladder issues. So what do we do?
What Do We Do About the Smell?
Of course it’s important to scoop often and keep that smell from building up but it’s impossible to scoop after each deposit. With 18 cats in Rita’s home and 11 in mine, good luck catching every clump. Also, many of us are leaving the house for eight hour work days and can’t physically be there to take care of the issue.
The Game Changer for Litter Box Odor! The Sunstar QAIS Air Purifier!
We recently were introduced to the best thing we’ve seen yet, for this issue! We each tried out the Sunstar QAIS Air Purifier and we think this is a game changer! It not only gets rid of the stink, but also reduces bacteria, viruses and the harmful effects to our health.
How Does it Work?
Thankfully, QAIS cares about our kitties and aren’t using perfumes to cover the odor, or dangerous chemicals to eliminate the issue. According to QAIS, “Our products feature a photocatalyst which is a material that absorbs light. Applying UV light to the photocatalyst creates a chemical reaction that oxidizes and decomposes odor causing compounds and reduces odors without any chemicals such as ozone or chlorine. It also decomposes harmful organic compounds (such as bacteria and viruses) that are floating in the air. This technology requires no filters or loud motors to work.” No dangerous chemicals. No perfumes or alcohol. And … IT WORKS!!!
What’s it Like to Use it?
The QAIS-4 system hangs on your wall and we were happily surprised to find it isn’t huge or heavy. We want something that looks clean and neat on our walls and they delivered. These of photos of the QAIS-4 installed in my home.
We were also worried about the noise. I’ve used air purifiers in the past and the noise made me crazy. These truly are “whisper quiet.”
Bottom Line…
This air purifier will eliminate those horrible litter box odors for you and your family. Company won’t even know you have cats! The QAIS will also reduce bacteria and virus’ to keep us all healthier. All of this is done in a healthy way while looking good. They even have a ten percent discount if you sign up for their emails. This air purifier is 100% CBA recommended!
